The Potty Training Has Started

Day 1 of 'proper' training was today.

We have introduced the idea before, but hoping the concept of 'softly, softly' will hold us in good stead.

Up until today I think we have had 1 'wees' on the potty, but LOTS of talk about it! Mr Big will, I am certain, vouch that there has been LOTS of talking, generally, which to be quite honest he is starting to struggle with (which I, of course, find hilarious - he really is outnumbered by talkative females in this house - I just dont think he expected it to have already gotten that way! She is only 2!)

So, the foundations have been laid, very slowly, as preparation for today.

Foundations included daily (and sometimes several times in a day) reading of a book about a little girl who learns to use the potty - called 'Lou Lou's loo' I think. It's an interactive book, so baby A can get involved in the story, which I think is really helpful. So much reading about 'Lou Lou' and much TALK about the story and the potty and what a potty is for.

Here is a link to said book for those that are interested: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1408802651 (and pic attached to this post)

The book refers to 'big girl pants ' - or at least when I read it, it does! So another foundation layer was a trip to the shops to buy some 'big girl pants' 'as we will need them when we are a big girl and we are doing wee wee's on the potty'. Off to Primark for some very reasonably priced 'big girl pants'. I can't recall the exact price, but I'm fairly sure they were no more than £2 a pack of 5 pairs. And they are pastel shades with a bow on the front. Perfect for 'big girls'. Certainly perfect for throwing away if they are 'unrescueable' after the inevitable accidents we are sure to encounter!

We have also introduced the potty as a fun gift from Mummy (Lou Lou also receives the potty as a gift from her Mummy) - and we made it 'fun' by stickering it. This had mixed results - on the positive side, she enjoyed this and was noticeably less wary of the potty after we did this. On the minus side, she insisted on putting stickers in the 'bowl', which will no doubt cause a few hygiene issues at some stage!

Finally, we also did a lot of 'practice' by sitting on the potty as a seat, in effect, while we were fully clothed and wearing a nappy, so no mention of doing any 'wee wee's - just sitting on it was enough.

After all this 'prep' Mr Big & I thought it was time. So we made a sticker chart and introduced the idea of a special sticker every time she did a wee wee on the potty, like a big girl. And we explained she could wear 'big girl pants' if she did wee wee's on the potty.

And then I phoned my Mum for some reassuring advice on what to do if we had accidents etc.

And then we got on with it.

Result: 3 wee's on the potty. 2 wee's off it (although 1 of those was trying to make it to the potty in time, and the other was a wee in excitement while playing peepo!)

We kept a nappy on for sleep, but for the rest of the day she was just in pants and a jersey dress.

I feel we did quite well. We even went out and about & managed a wee in a car park outside B&Q - buying tomato gro bags (another post I expect).

Let's see how we get on tomorrow. I really want this weather to hold!!!

Wondermum Makes - Tegenarium - Spider House!

My Mum isn't a lover of spiders and unfortunately she passed this fear unwittingly onto Roar when he was small. She didn't want him to stay afraid and so one Christmas, she bought him a Spider House Kit.  Between us we hoped he would learn about them and watch one and see they spend a lot of their time motionless and aren't really that scary. Don't get me wrong, I don't love it when a spider scuttles too close, but it's usually the shock of something scuttling into view that's more 'scary' than the spider itself.  Well, that's what I tell myself anyway!  We have no poisonous spiders to worry about so there really isn't anything to fear (although I know that isn't the same everywhere). We've had this Spider House Kit tucked away in a box for at least a couple of years as Roar was initially not keen.  However, in Lockdown all  the 'kits' are coming out and so has this one and, what's more, he's LOVED IT! He has l...

Best Lockdown Day Yet

Yesterday was a really lovely day.  I'm pretty sure that's the first time since Lockdown started that I've said that.  And it's rained all day! It's come at a really good time as we have just received a call to say Cub has been added to the UK's vulnerable list - which basically means we need to take extra measures to ensure he remains home and is 'shielded' from the virus by all of us. So to have a good day was important as we may be facing Lockdown for a lot longer than everyone else. I asked myself what it was that made it good and I realised we had no cross words, no raised voices, and we did all of the important things. Then it struck me.  We got up at the normal time and the kids actually went to bed a little later than usual (as we kept them up to Clap for Carers at 8pm) and yet we had only done the things that had real value.  Family value.  We had not pushed ourselves to complete loads of school work and I had not completed any paid work...

Wondermum Bakes, Makes & Creates! - Vegan Chocolate-coated Cookie Dough Balls

Further to my Kids Kitchen post, I thought I would share one of our latest efforts - vegan chocolate coated cookie dough balls - yum :) These are delicious and very moreish and crucially, something our littlest will eat.  Looking at him now, he appears a cheeky chubby little cherub and looks the picture of health, but what you don't see is how difficult it has been to get calories into him with his multiple food allergies and initially severe GORD (difficulties keeping food in). So having high calorie allergy safe foods he will eat is a constantly evolving part of our journey with our Cub :) We made these two ways - initially just following a fairly basic dough recipe and then adapting it to make it more vitamin enriched so see also my second post for the vitamin enriched version. Recipe The basic recipe we adapted from one of our favourite You Tuber bakers - Cupcake Gemma - so here is a link to her original (non-vegan recipe) which we then adapted  https://www.youtu...
